In USA, (in general) in what year-level do you study mitosis, calculus, and the mole (chem)?
In the book "Twilight" they are studying mitosis when the character is 17. At my school (Australia) we did that in year 9 (around 14years old). Is the book wrong, or do you actually not study it till then? As for calculus and the mole, i was just curious...

I learned that in my 7th year... Weird... But it was a private school...
2 :
yea i studied mitosis in 9th grade so i guess i was 13 or 14. im my school calculus and moles would have been like 11th grade maybe the end of 10th. but my answer kinda doesnt count cause im in Canada
3 :
it varies from high school to high school at my school, we also study it at year 9 but some schools it's 11th grade (around 16 years old)\ basically for sciences it's physics, chemistry, and biology, and some other science spread out between grades 9-12 for calculus, it definitely varies, i took calc BC in 9th grade, but some take it in 12th depending how advanced you are. hope that helps
4 :
Usually, in the US, you start studying life elementary school, but students start studying life science in the 6th or 7th grade (12 or 13 years), this includes mitosis. Students get into more in depth study of life in the 8th grade (13) or in high school 9th (14) or 10th in the study of Biology. Students may also study at college level in AP or advanced placement classes during any grade high school. AP Biology covers more than regular biology, ten times more. Edit: There are accelerated learning curriculums in schools (all private) and honors programs (private and public) in the US. Some students may be up to Calculus level in maths by 6th grade, but it depends on the individual and how dedicated parents are.

This web site offers information about different ways to estimate a population size of a species in a specific area. In addition, the site offers other information, but this specifically would be an interesting tie-in with the illuminations trout activity.

The top B-schools in Aus are MBS, AGSM and Monash. It is preferable to pursue MBA from one of these schools. All these schools expect you to have atleast 2 years of decent work exp. Some schools such as Deakin allow you pursue MBA without any work exp. Deakin is reasonably a good university for MBA. If you don't have any work exp, you cannot find a job in Australia irrespective of the university. My recommendation for you is to have atleast 2 years of work exp in top consulting firms or a multi national and then come to Aus for MBA. If you have decided to pursue MBA right now in Aus, then puruse dual degree such as Master of Marketing/MPA etc. and utilise your MPA degree to get a PR and Marketing degree to get into a business consulting firm. Australia offers lots of opportunities for accounting grads. You can expect to earn 45K - 50K with your dual degree without work exp or 65K - 70K with work exp and an MBA degree. Btw, don't forget to associate with well qualified devotees in the Hare Krsna Temple. Hare Krsna!!!

For many public schools in Australia there is a catchment area which means only those that live close to the school may attend so in that case where in Sydney will you be? Also was there really a need for 15 question marks?
2 :
wealthiest public school? Where are you going to live? Sydney is a big place. You arnt likely to do well in the "best" public school if you have a three hour train trip each way. With most things in life you get what you pay for. Why are you discounting Private schools?

Don't come over here, please, it's a waste of money, I can literally tell you now, the schooling system is sucky. It depends where you intend on staying (state/province). There should be a university set for this in each city/capital . I don't know any names, assides from murdoch. but again, you'd be wasting your moonneeey =3
2 :
I used to goto a really prestige university here, one of the best university in australia...also most funded.. There are scholarships(a teeny-tiny scholarship department) BUT it's very competitive and kind of *limited* the number of scholarships they offer and alot of them is only for aust residents only. unless you are the elite of elite your chance of getting scholarship as a foreign student is slimer than slim, they have alot of special conditions which is hard to fulfill even if your grades are really good. The school's offer "post-graduate research scholarships" for research students but there are very little scholarships for normal postgraduate students just for doing courses. you might need scholarships from industries and private organisations.. The US has way more scholarships $$$$ even for foreign students compare to australia. Way way more.... US is better than Austalia, unless you are dieing to get an australian citizenship after you graduate from college, which is much easier compared to US, other than that. Dont come here. Goto california or something.

What year of school would I be in in Australia?
Okay so I was born on 1st October 1994 or 01-10-94 which now makes me 15. I am in year 10 in the UK, I have tried working it out myself through information provided by Wikipedia but it is such a headache! It is really important I know this, so please answer if you know anything! Thank you so much! :)

If you had lived in Australia you would be on Summer Holidays right now, having just graduated from year 10. You would start year 11 in February. If you're moving to Australia, they may advance you to year 11, or put you in grade 10 for a year depending on your academic strength.
2 :
Tiffany is quite correct. I dare say our education systems are much the same.
3 :
Year 11 this year.
4 :
It depends on the state. For example, if you came to Queensland, you'd be in Grade 11, but if you went to school in New South Wales you'd be in Grade 10. And for the other states, I think you'd mostly be in Grade 10.
5 :
if you were moving to Western Australia you will be in year 11 this year
6 :
this year you will be going into year 11 if your going to perth and you would only have 1 year left and could then go into uni or tafe or whateva but if your in candberra say you go to college when you turn 16 and your also held back a year it's confusing beacuse after 1996 in perth they made kids go to school a year later but if you were born before july then you didn't have to be held back so you could be in college or high school depending on which state you intend to go live in

3 options: (i) public schools (nominally free) (ii) private schools (fees range from, say, $1,000 to $20,000 p.a.) (iii) home schooling Rules and regulations vary from state to state. –––––––––––––––––– For NSW: https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/index.htm http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ http://www.privateschoolsdirectory.com.au/
2 :
Most children don't do home schooling but there definately are some kids out there who do it. Public schools are funded by the government and usually the parents who send them have to pay either a very small amount of money or a 'donation' to the school. Private schools aren't funded by the government and so the parents have to pay the fees. For a private primary school the price can be around $800 a year. In a private highschool, it can be anywhere from $5000 - $20,000 per year. The school I go to is private but partially funded by the government, so it's not as expensive as other highschools. My parents pay about $6000. However some highschools can have very low prices ($1000-4000), but generally, you can attain a better education in schools priced over $5000. Also, some schools are co-ed which means that there are both male and female students. While other schools are same sex.

Maybe because U guys have better sense.

Really? That is so cool. I live in America and was always kind of a floater (could get along with anyone, and had good friends in lots of different cliques). People seem to really need to define themselves here, and label everyone around them; you're lucky if you don't have that.

Schooling in Australia? Melbourne or Adelaide

Schooling in Australia? Melbourne or Adelaide?
We are planning to move to Australia from UK. We have not made up our mind choosing Melbourne or Adelaide. We are looking for a good secondary school and a primary school for our children. Any good suggestions about schooling and choice of the city? Thanks very much for your help

Adelaide is a nice quite City. Everything closes at night. Life is slower. Melbourne is the opposite. Both have good schools. I'd be thinking about work more than Schools !!!!
2 :
There are plenty of good secondary and primary schools in both of theses cities, first find a good area to live in and then ask which local schools people in the neighbourhood think are best, then enrol your children. As far as cities are concerned Adelaide is a great place to live & visit. Adelaide has the lowest cost of living of all the mainland state capitals. South Australia is currently in a strong economic period, outperforming all other Australian states. Is the university schooling system in Australia more difficult than universities in America

Is the university schooling system in Australia more difficult than universities in America?
im planning on studying abroad in Australia for a semester or for a year, and was wondering if typically the schooling systems are more strict and give more homework things like that, because i know that America typically has one of the easiest education systems in the world.

I have attended University in bot countries doing the same degree and the course work was much harder in Australia
2 :
From what I understand of the American system, the Australian places more emphasis on a single exam for each subject with less % of marks assigned to other assessments throughout the term. Its not unusual for a subject to have an assessment of 30% single assignment, 70% exam - so one bad mark could result in a fail. This also means that often you have no idea how you are going in a subject until it is almost too late to correct.
3 :
It depends on the university and the particular course as they are all different. For instance my course at the University of Melbourne comprises of significantly more contact hours, more subjects and more assignments than the same course at LaTrobe University. Some universities pride themselves on being academic such as Australian National University, Melbourne University and Sydney University while others like LaTrobe seem to offer simpler courses. I have lived with American exchange students while attending uni and they think the contact hours were similar but our uni gave more homework in the terms of assignments and readings.

Do you think Australia is a Racist country

Do you think Australia is a Racist country?
I'm from an Asian background and go to High School in Australia. My friends and I have been bullied on numerous occasions and some teachers treat us unfairly. I have an Asian background and is currently attending High School in Australia. My friends and I have been teased for cultural and racial reasons even though we speak fluent English and we basically are no different to them apart from apperance. Some teachers also seem to treat us unfairly. Recently there were some racially motivated bashings toward Indian students and the former CEO of Telstra calls Australia a racist and a backwards country.

Yes very racist
2 :
Countries aren't racist, people are. And no, most Australians aren't racist. Don't judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few.
3 :
This is the 7th question I've encountered asking if Australians are racist, and I think most of them are indeed racist.
4 :
Not really. Everyone at school gets bullied at one point. And those people who are giving you unfair treatment DO NOT represent the entire nation of Australia, they only represent themselves and their upbringings, so don't think like that. Bear in mind that every single country in the world was or is racist to some extent, and Australia is much better and more tolerant than many countries in Europe and the US. I'm from the Middle East, been living in Australia for the past three years, I have NOT encountered any serious racists, I only met two people who jokingly were racist, but I didn't take personally cos I know they meant well.
5 :
I am not australian. but I do treat asians base on their back grounds, I think highly of S.Koreans, Taiwanese and Japanese, but other asians besides that, I consider them inferior. thats all I can say
6 :
One morning I was waiting outside an Avis rent-a-car location before it opened its doors to serve its clients.as I was waiting,a man in need of a car like me showed up and stood there.I didn't say anything until he started a conversation then we started to talk.he was from down under and was very friendly to me at all times.I've heard stories about Aussies' dislike for Asians, but not every Aussie think the same way.
7 :
I don't know- I've never been to Australia, but I've heard a lot about the racism. A friend of mine who is black and married an Australian woman had planned to move there with her, but decided it was better to remain in the U.S. after the negative experiences he and his wife had based on his being black.
8 :
yes australia hates any one with brown skin.. my friend is mixed race(black/white) and she moved there 2 years ago she seems to get on very fine though.
9 :
can be but im serb and migrated here at a young age
10 :
Hi there, Wow, I haven't seen this question for, oh I don't know, 12 hours or so. I was wondering what happened! Anyway, I'm Australian and I was bullied at school too. I was slim, pretty, blonde, loads of boys liked me and I achieved well at school and there was basically no names that I could really be called, so people just used to call me s lut and b itch. It happens to everyone at school at some point. And for everyone else, after living in Australia for 23 years I have honestly never met anyone there who is a serious racist. Find something new to talk about. -P
11 :
I've never been there but from what I've heard it is very racist. Many white racists from my country emigrate there because they are unhappy with them being the minority and they seem happy in Australia so I'm guessing it is
12 :
Yes. I do.
13 :
Most of the Australians in here are lying if they say Australia is not racist. Thing is, that the people there are racist but they just don't know it, that is the most dangerous form of racism. I was in India one time and unfortunately we get many Australian visitors there, so one lady walks into this store and takes her time to ask me: "Why do you people treat your women so bad?" After she said this, 2 American women and 1 Japanese women froze in their tracks and dropped all that they were holding. One of the American women came up to me and asked me if I was okay and she said to her friend that it was wrong for the Australian girl to do what she did. Worst part is that I was 14 at the time. Shows you the bigotry in that country. Yes, Australia is indeed racist and indeed a stupid country.
14 :
Yeah probably they are. But then again if an Australian/European would study in Asia country he/she might get bullied too.
15 :
Yes in some ways Australia is a more racist country, as in Australia, people still throw around racial slurs. But, hey why do you care about Racism anyway. You belong to the race of the smartest people in the world!!
16 :
Sandy Gifford, a La Trobe University professor, said that in her opinion Australia is a racist society and racism runs deep in the country. She said, "Racism in Australia is pervasive, part of the fabric of everyday life and normalised in ways that render it invisible and make it one of the strongest forms of structural violence
17 :
No that country is not racist you and your friends may be razzed and are taking it the wrong way. If they are being harsh get out of that school or rat them out. Australia is not at all racist, I've been there many times and all the people there were kind. You must have offended them somehow and now are blaming a whole country for a few people's action towards your offensive remarks.
18 :
Australians don't like Asians because they're the only minority there to hate on. If blacks and Hispanics were visible in Australia, they'd hate them too. That's how it is anywhere. Just ignore it.

I hear Australia has corky laws, what are they

I hear Australia has corky laws, what are they?
I plan on attending school in Australia and i was wondering if anyone can give me some insite on laws that shouldn't be broken there.
Other - Australia - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I have no idea what "corky" laws are, I've never heard of them. Generally, as far as laws are concerned, it is advisable not to break any of them. If you are going to drive a car, the police can stop you at random and test you for blood alcohol. You will most likely be caught and booked if you speed, do not wear a seatbelt or use your mobile phone while driving. For the most part the laws are much the same in Australia as they are in the rest of the world. The drinking age is 18 and the age of consent for sex is 16 (17 in Tasmania and South Australia and 18 for male/male sex in Queensland).
2 :
Maybe they mean corkage laws ? You can bring your own wine and beer into alot of restaurants (called BYOB ) BUT they can, and do charge you for opening your bottles for you. It can vary from a couple of dollars to $ 4-5 for better restaurants. Even if you twist the top off of your own beer, they can charge you a fee, even if they haven't put their mitts on your bottle. They also have cakeage laws .... where they cut and serve your birthday cake or wedding cake, and charge you an arm and a leg per slice, but if you don't get married, or have a big birthday bash, you should be right mate. The laws here are basically the same as in the States - so if you're known as a nice-guy there, you should have no problems here. No drugs, drinking and driving loud parties after a certain time follow the speed laws ( if you can find them posted - if you can't...tough luck - the cops know what they are ) etc etc ... From ToxicCustard: ***From my observations, it's probably true that Americans abroad have a certain reputation. I don't think this is entirely deserved, but is caused by the loudest most obnoxious, and hence most noticeable, minority. (These people are also highly unlikely to realise that they have these annoying traits.) So, my advice for anyone going overseas (and this probably applies anywhere - not just to Australia): Don't be loud. Take a moment to listen. If everyone else is talking quieter than you, you're being loud. Try not to look too much like a tourist. Don't wear a shiny tracksuit if you're not on your way to training. Keep your camera tucked away. Don't even think about wearing a bumbag. (and don't call it a fanny pack - fanny is Ozzie speak for the front girlie-bits ! ) Don't complain about things being different from at home. That's the whole point of going away. Even if you don't learn all the local lingo, at least learn how to pronounce the place names properly. Hang with the locals, don't stick to the tourist traps. You'll probably have a better time, and you'll certainly get a better taste of the place. But don't patronise the locals. Don't call anything "quaint" unless it really is. Leave a good impression. Make up for your obnoxious countrymen.*** It's a great website, for some general do's and don't's...... http://www.toxiccustard.com/australia/visiting.html
3 :
I'm sorry, what is a corky law? We don't have any wild laws like you might think, like no riding kangaroos after midnight, always wear an akubra hat and so forth, we aren't that weird. Drive on the left hand side of the road, always wear your seatbelt, drinking age is 18. Oh yeah, we aren't allowed to kill people either. A shame that... We have pretty much the same, or similar laws as the US and UK.
4 :
It is illegal to roam the streets wearing black clothes, felt shoes and have black shoe polish on your face as these are the items of an cat burglar...(hmmm yes I can see how black shoes polish would make you invisible to the police) It is illegal to walk on the right hand side of the pavement...(We drive on the left...we walk on the left!) Taxi cabs are required to carry a bale of hay in the trunk...(incase of hay emergencies) In Victoria, it is illegal to wear hot pink shorts after midday on a Sunday...(it worries me that it's legal before midday on a Sunday!) A life sentence is 200 years...(makes sense to me) Children may not purchase cigarettes, condoms or alcohol, but they may use them...(we'd prefer our children pilfer cigarettes, condoms and alcohol!) You may never leave your car keys in the door of an unattended vehicle...(where I live, if you leave your keys in the car, it'll be gone before the cops show up to give you a ticket, so i wouldn't worry too much about this one ;P) It is illegal to dress up as batman...(oooookay...) Under Australian Communications Authority (ACA) regulations, a modem can't pick up on the first ring. If it does the, ACA permit for your modem is invalid and there's a $12,000 fine. -Telecommunications Act 1991...(I want to meet the poor little guy who has to monitor this law) Bars are required to stable, water and feed the horses of their patrons...(because we all ride horses to the pub of course) Some state laws: Victoria · Only licensed electricians may change a light bulb. The fine for not abiding by this law is 10 pounds...(stop me if you've heard this one...How many Licensed electricians does it take to change a light bulb?) · You must have a neck to knee swimsuit in order to swim at Brighton Beach....(I would look fricken awesome in a neck to knee swimsuit)

As a visitor to Australia probably the laws that you might not be used to is the driving laws. There are speed cameras over a good portion of Australia and they can stop you while driving with no cause. They can merely want to check you out for a variety of reasons.
6 :
Heavens knows what yu meAN by "corky" laws!!! But Australia has pretty much the same laws as most "developed" countries and most are borrowed/based on Laws/principles from England with a few of our own modifications along the way. The basics are: NO GUNS- they are restricted and highly controlled. DRIVE ON THE LEFT ie in an Australian car on an Australian road the driver should always be toward the middle of the road- if you are closest to the verge you are on the wrong side of the road. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BEAT -its the law NEVER DRINK DRIVE- .05 is the limit NO HOONING DONT BUY/USE DRUGS DONT BE A LITTER BUG- ON THE SPOT FINES OBEY SPEED LIMITS- ask a local what the maximums are or go to a Government service ccentre for a learner drivers book. In Tassie the Max on a highway is generally 110 kmh, 60 on major suburban link roads, 50 on all other streets, 40 in a school zone to give you an idea of the kinds of speeds involved -- (milesph -> kmh = mph/6 then *10) ie 36mph=60kmh (and our cops hide in bushes with speed guns or cameras booking people- you wont know until the fine arrives in the mail!) DONT EXPECT AUSTRALIANS TO THINK THE SUN SHINES OUT OF AMERICAS A$^%$% (anal sphincter). Because we get peeved off with how Americans think the world revolves around America. NEVER EVER USE THE WORD "FANNY" as someone else said in Aus it means female "genitalia". THONGS ARE THINGS THAT GO ON YOUR FEET not up your bum- you call thongs "flip flops" or something strange. NO ALCHOHOL AT MOST MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS WE DONT GIVE TIPS (tips may be nice for genuinely excellent service but are not part of our culture- its not expected) DONT CALL PEOPLE MAAM / SIR aus is informal, the most formal form of address is pretty much Mr/Mrs.

Would i be able to use an Australian school ID in New Zealand to purchase alcohol even though i am 18

Would i be able to use an Australian school ID in New Zealand to purchase alcohol even though i am 18?
I lost my wallet with my drivers license and i leave tomorrow afternoon. All my friends in NZ want to go clubbing and drinking, yet the only ID i have is my school ID from Australia. Anybody know from experience if they accept or decline them, because i don't want to make a fake and i leave tomorrow =S

How about you don't purchase alcohol. Life is better without alcohol.
2 :
I think u shud be able too.. Its jusr identification. If it was a driver's license then you would be use tht as identification anywhere, same goes for ID cards
3 :
You support Bayern München for what reason? Schalke für immer!
4 :
If you are travelling fron Aust to NZ and you are over 18, then you will only need to use your passport!!
5 :
No, use your passport!
6 :
If the student ID has both your photo and date of birth you may be able to use it, however most places would ask for your passport as ID in preference.
7 :
There are 3 types of ID acceptable legally. A NZ issued drivers licence, a passport from NZ or another country or an '18+ card'. Presumably, however, you have a passport. You will need to take that with you. Photocopies aren't acceptable but you should (however) take a copy of it and leave the copy somewhere safe in case it gets stolen or lost when you are out drinking. If you look under 25 or 30 the seller will most likely ask you for ID and they are well within their rights to not sell it. So your passport is the only legal ID you have. FWIW, some places will accept your school ID as proof of age but it won't be somewhere with a legal alcohol requirement. So if you can get (or instance) cheap bus tickets or entry fees that would probably be ok.

Can you petition to change your high school teacher in australia

Can you petition to change your high school teacher in australia?
I go to a school in melbourne australia and im in year 9. i have a science teacher that picks on students well beyond what the average teacher might do. im sick of her and so are many others in our class. she constantly yells at us for doing the slightest things, and even when we do nothing wrong shell still yell at us. if we try to tell her we didnt do anything, we just get sent out side for being 'negative, and constantly arguing' and then shell yell at us outside and give us a detention. seriously, its gotten out of hand. i cant take it anymore and neither can my classmates. there are a few pew that she picks on even more (so much that the way she treats everyone else would be considered 'nice') i am one of those people that get picked on substantially. im not disruptive in class, im not rude, i do my work and im rather intelligent (in fact our whole class is, due to it being a select entry class). but she picks on me no matter what. if i ask a question she will yell at me saying 'WERNT YOU LISTENING? I JUST SAID THAT! IM SICK AND TIRED OF YOU NOT LISTENING!!' then someone else RIGHT after i asked, and i mean right after, would ask the same question and she would nicely explain it to them. she is completely bias. some people in my class have had their parents see her, as they were being 'negative' (they really didnt do anything). they would try to explain at the interview how the teacher picks on people, but the teacher, usually with a coordinator, will come up with something to say such as 'oh, i know miss ?? very well. she does not treat her students like that' i want her GONE. i do not want to go to school anymore because of her. can i make a petition with student and parent signatures requesting a different science teacher? some parents have already complained to the school, but nothing has happened so far, and im not going take it anymore. i will do everything i can to get rid of her. she is making our lives miserable.

You need documentation, you have to catch her in the act, then she is done for. I have suggested to your age that you take your cell phone, if you can, and take pictures or tape record what happened and then approach the principal first and they often side with teachers in their school, so here in the USA, you go to the district office. parents and adults of students carry alot of power here because we , the adults elect the school board and they are the ultimate bosses , even over the superintendent. I am a retired teacher and I know my stuff in the USA. Teachers like this are an embarrassment to me as a professional teacher and they need to be gone. TEachers are there to help the cooperative students ~!!!

catholic schools in australia have imposed strict moral standards

catholic schools in australia have imposed strict moral standards?
on all new teachers.,including abstaining from sex before marriage, not living with a partner before marriage, having pre-marital sex, using condoms or divorcing.we have a massive shortage of teachers here.what do you thing
Law & Ethics - 3 Answers

I can understand why they would, but I also understand why there's such a shortage of teachers. I taught in Catholic schools here in the States for 8 years and I was quite capable of teaching such things without necessarily living them. Further, divorce, in and of itself, is not condemned by the Church. Remarriage after divorce is without an annulment. They should look into it.
2 :
This is standard procedure for Catholic schools. All Church employees sign a morals clause stating something like: Because all Diocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work. If you were a parent of three school age children who was trying to scrape together enough money every month to send your children to Catholic school for education and religious and moral development, how would you feel if you found out that your fourth grader found out that her teacher was living in sin? With love in Christ.
3 :
The Catholic Religion is not an elected governing factor in life!. Its a dictated imposition by a handful of men in the Vatican who surrounded by wealth, health care, ample food to eat, warm and comfortable lodgings and countless other luxuries of life - live far in isolated excess of their so called flocks. 2,000 + years have accrued and yet these old uncompromising men, many of whom in their younger day were violent sexual abusers, drunkards & guilty of innumerable other offenses are all still intent on maintaining and enforcing their ancient old means of impediment and decrepied ways of the dark ages on modern living. Look at any/all Catholic countries were they are still allowed to dictate and pass their unelected decrees and/or laws on the masses. South America, Philipines. Africa. portions of Europe and other predominate catholic countries. Behind government scenes they ensure the people are kept poor, uneducated with little health or welfare. The women expected to give birth annually and all continue to live in squalor and filth. The Roman Catholic fath is still what it has always been, a private unelected institution, ruled and governed by perverts from the top the bottom to ensure their unelected life of privlige rank and wealth over countless millions of poor needy uneducated souls - whose daily life is no more then virtual despair - because of papal unelected enforced indoctrination of countless millions - is maintained in the glorious style their centuries of dictatotship has benefited them. Its the same with Islam / Budism! Who needs those kinds of religions? Why are they all tolerated! Governments are freely elected by the people. Religions are no more than imposed impostions by unelected clerics the world over.

I personally believe that coeducation offers the most rounded education however i do not believe you come out socially inept if you go to an all boys or girls high school. Some schools have long traditions of being secular and I think that should be left to the wishes of the school board. If you wish to go to a coed school then there's plenty to choose from.

In Canada, the only schools which wear uniforms daily are some private schools, and some faith based schools. The government and school boards tried to make uniforms mandatory here several years back, but it did not fly. The students petitioned that it would infringe on their rights, and would take away individuality. The school board and government argued that it would make everyone look the same, thus taking away reasons for people to be discriminated against. I don't agree with that. If it isn't your clothes, they will find something else to pick on.

We do have uniforms in the US, but only in private schools. I'm from the US but I did go to school in Ireland for a year where all schools, public and private, have uniforms too and I didn't like it. It was too much ironing, a bit frumpy, and I like expressing my style. In the US it just depends on the type of school, but the majority of schools its wear what you want... but all schools DO have dress codes that regulate what you can wear in the school building. For instance, at my old high school you couldn't wear skirts shorter than a certain length, tank tops couldn't have too thin of straps, and you couldn't show any midriff, boys couldn't wear their pants too baggy, etc.

How do American universities evaluate high school transcripts from Australia

How do American universities evaluate high school transcripts from Australia?
Hello, I'm an American living in China. I'm an English teacher and have a Chinese student who attended a private school in China, that uses the Australian high school curriculum. The student's G.P.A is only 2.0 and her SAT score is 1500. The student thinks that American universities will evaluate her high school transcripts in a different way than they do those from other countries, because she took difficult classes such as calculus. Also, she claims that students in Australia get very low grades, and because she took hard classes she believes that American universities will lower there bench mark for the G.P.A . I find it hard to believe. Am I right or is she?
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

A 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is still a C student. Most universities in America hold foreign students to a higher standard, not a lower one, because they prefer to let American students in first. Also, there is an expectation that if you wish to study in a foreign country, you take your education very seriously, which would be reflected in your GPA and test scores. 2.5 is the GPA cut-off for most American universities. Additionally, most Americans applying to colleges (especially good colleges) have also taken classes like calculus. Many of them have even taken Advanced Placement Calculus, which allows them to receive college credit upon entry, and they received very good grades in those subjects. Sounds like your student is making excuses for her poor academic performance. You're absolutely right, and she is completely confused.

How can I become a primary school teacher in Australia

How can I become a primary school teacher in Australia?
Hey guys, I'm a 20 year old female and am currently studying at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand (my homeland) and hope to have my Bachelors degree finished by mid next year. My boyfriend and I are then planning on making the move to Melbourne, Australia where we will start our next big adventure. Although my majors will be in criminology and sociology, I have recently started to think about what I REALLY want to do in life, and primary school teaching is one of the things that has really stuck in my mind. I love children, I'm patient and love to teach as well as learn and I think I would make a fantastic teacher. The only thing is, is that I'm not too sure about prerequisites for primary teaching in Australia and where I would have to study, for how long etc etc. I have looked all over the internet but havent really found much information so was wondering if anyone knew about teacher training in Australia (because I have a feeling it may be quite a bit different from NZ). I hope you can help it would be very much appreciated!! Kind regards, Amy

2 :
Hello my fellow kiwi :-D I am currently studying to be a primary school teacher through Massey University. When I started the course here, it was a 3 year course, but has gone up to a 4 year course now (in which the student teachers will come out on a higher qualification than I will). However, there is the option to do an additional year (post-grad) to gain the same qualifications as them. Anyway ~ I have been doing some searching of the web for you, and it seems that in Australia, they have the "Masters of Teaching (Primary)" which is a 2 year course (with some admission requirements) here's the link (it's in Melbourne too)- http://www.latrobe.edu.au/handbook/2007/postgraduate/education/coursework/rmt.htm You may find that the 2 year course is no where near as intense as the NZ course, and therefore if you do become qualified, if you decide to come back to NZ and teach, you may be required to sit an additional year or 2 to get the Bachelor of Education (Teaching Primary). Good luck with your ventures :-)
3 :
Each state has its own department of education, who may have slightly different requirements. I teach in Sydney, so I work under the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. If you have an existing bachelor's degree, then you will probably only need one year of full time study to get a Diploma of Education or Master of Teaching. Starting from scratch, you would complete a Bachelor of Education, or double degree like a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching, which is a 4 or 5 year degree (full time). You should look for something with as much student teaching time as possible. Once you get yourself a qualification, you apply to the DET for approval to teach. You have an interview with them to assess your suitability, and from what i gather, as long as you don't bork the child protection question, you'll get an approval number. Then it's just a matter of casual teaching until someone offers you a long term block or teaching (i'm on my fourth year-long block in a row) or better still, permanency. (As a sidenote, one of the teachers on my grade did a bachelor in forensics or criminology or something - we use him to scare some of our more sneaky perpetrators :P - then a one year Diploma, and has been teaching with us for a bit over a year now.)

There is a lot of variation from school to school but i will give you some examples. School (1) starts at 8:50 and finishes at 3:20. It has 8 x 40 minute periods with a recess of 20 minutes and lunch of 40 minutes. Sport is on Wednesday afternoon and is for 3 x periods. Homework varies by teacher and subject, much the same as your school. School (2) starts at 8:30 and finishes at 2:48. It has 4 x 72 minute periods with recess of 20 minutes, lunch of 40 minutes and another short break. Homeworh is as stated above. There are too many variables to give you a more concise answer.

Hey School aged students in Canada and the USA, uniform question

Hey School aged students in Canada and the USA, uniform question:?
Hey, I am an Australian, completed all my schooling in Australia, I see alot of sitcoms about your two countries and wondering, why since you both were also ex-british colonies, that you don't have uniforms like both Australia and New Zealand do? what was the story behind being able not to wear them? please explain? I was talking about the government/public ones, obviously the private ones.
Other - Canada - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Parents voted against it. However, uniforms are making a comeback. In Canada, it has absolutely nothing to do with being a British colony or not. It was whether the school wanted them or not.
2 :
the parents voted against it. it is cheaper to wear your regular clothes than a prescribed unform. being a british thing will be the biggest reason why canadians or anericans will not want it. believe it or not, canadians try to be different from the brits as much as they can.
3 :
I grew up in a city of 165000 people and we had 8 high schools and 1 catholic high school. Only the catholic high school had uniforms (gray pants/skirts, white shirts/blouses, maroon sweaters with a small monogram). It was no big deal. If you went there you wore the uniform, if you went to a public high school you wore what you wanted.
4 :
Well ya, as you know, some of them do... like private boarding ones, etc. I think it's just.. never really been a big thing here. I'm from Alberta, Canada. Back in the day I know they made kids wear uniforms (like 1900's - 1930's). But after that it just seemed to stop. I'm sure somewhere along the line there was a vote. I can't really answer for the US or other Canadian provinces though.
5 :
Like the previous posts said, it depends of the province/state. In Quebec, every school decides if their students have to wear a uniform or not. We used to all have uniforms when the catholic church was in charge of education (before 1960s) but it slowly disappeared. In the last 5-10 years, some public schools started to bring back the uniforms because they realised it could reduce violence (showing whitch gang/trend they belong) and intimidation (rich with nice clothes vs poor). I'm not sure about that but in Canada, it might also have something to do with the Canadian charter of rights and freedom. I in the 80s, 90s schools were scared about being sued beacuse they wouldn't let people wear whatever they want, but since there's been a judgement saying it's leagal for a schools/employers to impose a uniform as long as it's reasonable, it's getting more popular.
6 :
I have no idea about what they do in the usa, some schools in Canada wear uniforms and some don't
7 :
Catholic schools usually have uniforms... public school don't generally but they made have a dress code ie. no hats, no belly buttons showing, finger tip skirt/short length, no gang colour etc.
8 :
most public schools dont provide uniforms because its either not in the budget or theyre just not needed, you can wear pretty much anything to most public schools but some schools have dress codes such as no tank tops, no hats and stuff like that

living in australia.. wanting to move to USA after high school?
im 17.. i finish high school next year (2011) and i all i want to do is travel and experience new things i have ALWAYS wanted to live in USA so i figure what better time then to go to college over there. i was going to do student exchange to usa but never got around to doing it i want to go somewhere where it snows!! i was thinking maybe colorado or washington but i would LOVE to go to New York.. but my parents dont want me too because its not safe so what do you all think of an 18yearold fresh out of high school moving from australia to new york to attend and art college? (this is if i can get into one) also does it snow alot in ny? i love the snow and we dont get it here in australia.. and also would i fit in okay in usa? apprently people from australia are accepted easily in usa because they love our accents? haha please help!

NY, like any other big city can be unsafe depending on where you go, when you go there, and how you present yourself. it's not like you are going to get chased by an angry mob because you are australian, but people will try to take advantage of a naive (no offense, you will be new there), young woman. usually schools expect people coming from other places and provide resources for them to stay safe. if you have some common sense you will be fine though. as far as cities go, it doesn't get more intense than NY. it's a different world literally. yes, it snows there but not a lot usually. if you want more snow check out boston a little farther north.
2 :
YES!!! everyone loves Australian accents! If i met you, you would be my new best friend! :D anyway, i would not go to NY to live because of the crime, etc., but definitely visit in the winter to see the snow or for new years it is the best! believe it or not, it does not snow year round here! NY gets really hot in the summer too. I would try the Washington DC area, that would be really interesting for a foreign student. Colorado would been fun. Im from Tennessee and have never been there, but i want to visit there. And recently, we have a lot of weird temperature changes all over the country, so it will snow pretty much anywhere in the winter! And not just because i live close to it, but the University of Tennessee at Knoxville is an awesome school with a lot of diverse students, so I would check it out!
3 :
It would be a difficult move. Life in the U.S. is very different compared to life in Australia in etiquette and cultural means. Each state is different in their own way, including accents or different words. It would take some adjusting, but you seem willing to learn. About the snow, haha, you'll hate it after a while! I'm Minnesotan (don't talk about the movie Fargo up here ) and this state is known for cold winters and hot summers. It's funny when someone from California or Florida comes up wearing winter jackets and mittens in 60 degree weather. To native Minnesotans, that's warm in the winter! :) Anyway, if it's snow you want, Minnesota has plenty of that. There are also respected art colleges here. We are known to be a friendly state, and most girls I know love British and Australian accents. There are so many different cultures and races in the United States. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to fit in.

moving to a school in the usa and i am from australia? any tips?
ok, so im moving to the USA and im going to be starting school over there, ive had my schooling life in australia, i am a 16 year old moving next week. I just need tips on what the schools are like over there and how to fit in well as it will probably be a big culture shock, for example are there like popular groups, and all that? because whereas australia is just laid back, like just watching these american shows gives an influence of american schools which i think are made up of different catergories like, the popular kids, the normal kids, the nerds, and the losers , just wondering what schools in america are like.

Do you have any choice in where you're going? I think, generally speaking, the west coast is more laid back than the east coast. The midwest is very conservative. The south, a bit different, but Florida is not like the other southern states since so many people move there from different parts of the country. So east coast, south, midwest, south west, and north west are very different climates and cultures. I went to school in the Northwest and now live in the Northwest and I just love it. I think your list of typical groups is pretty accurate. I started high school after moving to a new state so I did not know anyone and they all grew up together. So it was very hard for me to fit in. At first, I tried to change myself to fit in with them. The standard uniform for guys at that time was corduroy pants and long sleeve plaid shirt. So I did that until one day I walked up to the group of cool people and after one of their friends walked away to class, someone made a comment about him that just cut him down to ribbons and they all laughed. I figured, if that's how you treat your friends I don't need your friendship. So I spent the rest of that year alone and frustrated. During our orientation, someone said that joining a club or a sport would be a good way to meet people. So, much to my surprise, I joined the cross country running team (I was not too interested in football, baseball, or soccer). And I did get to know those guys and pretty quickly found myself part of a good group of people. So that really helped. The other thing that surprised me was that this tall, goofy, red headed kid turned out to be not such a strange person after we talked a bit. I found that he had a similar background and the same interests as I did. So we started hanging out my sophomore year and eventually became best friends. So, I learned to not judge a book by its cover and give people a chance. I had a similar experience in college with a guy I thought was the supreme leader of the party animals but turned out we had very similar views on life and practically the same hopes and dreams for the future. I think it is also fair to say this, there are usually enough groups (unless you move to a small town) that you will find one (or two) that you fit in well with. I think kids these days (I am the parent of a 14, 16, and 19 year old) are more confident in themselves and more in tune with their identity. I think they are less prone to follow a single crowd and more prone to form a group that fits them. So that provides a lot of opportunity for kids of all types to be themselves. I'll also repeat the advice I received, join a sport or club that interests you. That will be the easiest way to find people who share your interests. You can take heart at least in this: everyone will LOVE your Aussie accent! Over the past 10 years or so sports shows and game shows have brought in Aussies and British commentators and hosts because their accents are so appealing to Americans. For some reason, we think they sound really cool, we get a kick out of the funny words you people have, and we just love hearing that voice. So I bet that, once you start talking, you will attract people who want to listen to you. And then, I'm sure good relationships will follow. Good luck!

Hated, listen, short and sweet, be yourself, keep your nose clean and you will fit in okay with the system in place over this side of the world. Over this side of the world the kids are more laid back. Just remember, your going to school to learn, not be a socialite. With your accent you will pick up loads of friends, but be choosy who.
