Honestly, I would say man up and tough it out. In the real world you can't go to a "special" job if you feel your current job is too difficult. Going back to the "special" school will just end up hurting him/her in the long run.

He would need to get used to the real world. If he's good enough for a "normal" school he has no reason to go back the spacial school. Of course if he went back he would be with people he can relate too. It's up to him really. And of course the staff there would be able to help him more and be more specialized in dealing with people with disabilities like him. So in any case it depends on ones individual circumstances. Maybe it could be bulling that makes him want to go back?

I would advise this person to have a long discussion with a school counselor. If the easy subjects in their current school are too difficult - perhaps they need more support services to be successful. Or perhaps the school is truly too difficult. I have always believed there is always a way to make an inclusive school setting successful and that special segregated schools do not help people be successful adults, but instead disable them further. I have learned recently to make one exception, that is when it is not the work that is too difficult, but the social atmosphere of the school too stressful to navigate and a small setting is required to be successful.
