In the book "Twilight" they are studying mitosis when the character is 17. At my school (Australia) we did that in year 9 (around 14years old). Is the book wrong, or do you actually not study it till then? As for calculus and the mole, i was just curious...

it varies from high school to high school at my school, we also study it at year 9 but some schools it's 11th grade (around 16 years old)\ basically for sciences it's physics, chemistry, and biology, and some other science spread out between grades 9-12 for calculus, it definitely varies, i took calc BC in 9th grade, but some take it in 12th depending how advanced you are. hope that helps

Usually, in the US, you start studying life elementary school, but students start studying life science in the 6th or 7th grade (12 or 13 years), this includes mitosis. Students get into more in depth study of life in the 8th grade (13) or in high school 9th (14) or 10th in the study of Biology. Students may also study at college level in AP or advanced placement classes during any grade high school. AP Biology covers more than regular biology, ten times more. Edit: There are accelerated learning curriculums in schools (all private) and honors programs (private and public) in the US. Some students may be up to Calculus level in maths by 6th grade, but it depends on the individual and how dedicated parents are.

This web site offers information about different ways to estimate a population size of a species in a specific area. In addition, the site offers other information, but this specifically would be an interesting tie-in with the illuminations trout activity.
